my Design Goes International

a public media artwork that premiered at the Now Building at Outernet London, an immersive entertainment space in central London, England. the giant characters dance and humorously depict the transformation of Western art history. the idealized balance of the Renaissance, the splendor of the Baroque, and the solemnity of Neoclassicism are delicately reinterpreted to encourage viewers to think deeply about their relationship with the world and themselves.
how we collaboratedwith our partners
since the launch of Wave in 2020, District has continued to create public media artworks and collaborate with global media platform companies. outsideNet London showed great interest in ‘Wave’ and approached us about a possible collaboration. although technical issues did not lead to a direct contract, we proposed to create new content for OuterNet London’s unique space, which received a positive response and the collaboration was finalized.
collaboration process and communication methods
we worked on the projectwithout any subcontractors , communicating directly with our partners. this allowed us to collaborate quickly and efficiently. outsideNet London had a well-structured team for each task and thoroughly prepared materials in advance, which made the process smooth.
during the pre-production phase, we discussed the direction of the content and technical requirements at length, and during the full production phase, we led the work and shared key points with OutsideNet London.
challenges encountered duringthe project and how they were resolved
the Now Building boasts world-class media specs, with 26K ultra-high resolution and high frame rates.
we were concerned about whether we could meet these high technical requirements. the ultra-high resolution production process also put a lot of pressure on the schedule due to long render times.
to solve this problem, we closely analyzed the resolution, size, structure, and viewing path of the screensto find the optimal production solution.
design elements that were difficult to tryin Korea, but possible overseas
outsideNet London’s atypical four-story, hexahedral structure iscovered on all sides except the floor with high-resolution LED screens to maximize immersion.
we designed the content to take full advantage of this spatial feature.
in particular, anamorphic techniquesutilizing giant movements wereemployed to create agiantcharacter thatstarts from the floor and grows through the ceiling tocreate a strong impression.
in addition, we wanted to provide a differentiated experience by applying content in the form of a performance, which had not been tried before in the Now Building.
project outcomes and scalability
the project allowed us to experiment with a new form of public media art by creating performative content over 7 minutes long. due to the enthusiastic response from the audience, the screening period, originally scheduled until June 2024, was extended until the end of December.
based on these results, the projectwas expanded to exhibition content at Culture Station Seoul 284in 2023 , and on February 26, this year, it began screeningat CGV ScreenX.
through this, we proved that media art content can be expanded to various platforms, including cultural spaces, exhibitions, and movie theaters.
increased overseas demand forKorean design studios
korean designers have exceptional technical skills, creativity, and sensitivity to the latest trends. these factors make them attractive to overseas companies, and the demand for Korean design studios seems to be growing. we believe this trend is likely to continue in the future.
