cartier Foundation for Contemporary Art to inaugurate new space with Jean Nouvel in late 2025
another Parisian landmark to be unveiled at the Palais Royal
the Cartier Foundation for Contemporary Art celebrates its 40th anniversary
founded in 1984, the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain (CartierFoundation for Contemporary Art) was the first corporate contemporary art foundation in France, and has consistently supported artist-driven activities and creative experimentation. After its time in Monsel, the foundation moved to a glass building on rue Raspay designed by architect Jean Nouvelin 1994.
a new addition to the Palais Royal, 2025
atthe end of 2025, the Cartier Foundation for Contemporary Art will open a new space in the heart of Paris, on the Place du Palais-Royal, a historic Haussmannian buildingdating from the reign of Napoleon III, formerly home to the Grand Hôtel du Louvre and the Louvredes Antiquaires.
jean Nouvel respects the historical context of the existing building, while proposing a structure that is open to the city. the windows, which open towards rue Faubourg Saint-Honoré, rue Rivoli, and Place de la République, allow visitors and passersby alike to encounter the art space and the city in a new way.
a malleable art space that allows for creative experimentation
the new space, which totals 8,500 square meters, includes 6,500 square meters of exhibition space and 1,200 square meters of public passageways. Of particular note are the five movable platforms, each of which allows for vertical and flexible structures, transforming the space up to 11 meters in height. this will allow artists to utilize the space itself as a work of art.
through this space, the Foundation hopes to continue the dynamic dialog between contemporary culture and the city. more than just an art exhibition space, the Cartier Foundation for Contemporary Art will be a platform for experimentation and communication, open to both Parisians and international audiences.
