the artistic ecosystem of THILA, a complex cultural space in Sangsoo, was highlighted by the band Hyuk-oh
tHILA, a new art hub in Seoul’s Sangsu-dong neighborhood, is more than just a building; it is a multidisciplinary cultural space that fusescoffee, sound, architecture, and media art, and is a platform that proposes a space-based artexperience for bothcreators and audiences. the band HYUKOHwas one of the first to be attracted to the space, citing its musical experimentation and cultural depth.
sangsu-dong, where a new wave of culture is flowing
tila is located in the heart of Sangsu-dong, close to Hangang Park, Hongdae, and Hapjeong. the building, a remodeled former shoe factory, was designed with a zero-waste and circular resource philosophy, embracing both local and sustainable.
with the concept of a “barista’s house,”Bean Brothers Coffeehouse Seoulorganized the space with different themes on each floor, including a living room, study, coffee bar, and rooftop. it offers more than just coffee, and has become a three-dimensional cultural space.
weSA, a bastion of sound art and electronic music
WeSA (We are Sound Artists) uses the entire space, including Tilla’s three basement levels, to organize experimental programs such as electronic music festivals, audio-visual art, and listening sessions. In particular, Sound Gymnasium, a “gymnasium for the solitary listener,” has provided a sensory immersionexperience.
tila’s structural features, a close collaboration of creatives
architect Yang Soo-inwas in charge of the architecture and interiors, and various artists, including the creative team of Bean Brothers and electronic music composer Jae-bal Ga (director of WeSA), participated in the project, organizing each floor as a creativehub with a clear purpose. This makes it function as more than a single space, but as a nucleus of an artistic ecosystem.
future cultural impact and expectations
with the Danginri Cultural and Creative Development Center scheduled for completion in 2025 and the Seosu Line light rail set to open in 2028, Sangsu-dong is being touted as Seoul’s next art district. at its center, TILA is growing into a complex cultural space that connects everyday life and art, with various global projects planned for the future.
