underground city expansion, Villejuif-Gustave Roussy station

completed in January of this year, the Villejuif Gustave Roussy Station blurs the line between open and closed spaces in the city center, opening up new possibilities for future urban infrastructure.

sustainability, energy efficiency, and resilience are key.

“It’s like an upside-down skyscraper. the ground of the city becomes the sky.”

that’s how Dominique Perrault, who designed the station, describes it. home to the 14th and 15th lines of the Paris Metro , it is part of theGrand Paris Express project, a massive transit hub built 50 meters underground to transform the city’s transportation network.

a key feature of the project is its design, which makes efficient use of the underground environment.a temperature-regulating system was built using natural underground resources to reduce reliance on artificial heating and cooling and minimize unnecessary emissions. the main structural materials include durable concrete, stainless steel, and glass, whichare designed to be easy to maintain over the long term. the buildingalso maximizesnatural lightto save lighting energy while maximizing visual openness.도시 지하철 루시역 건축

the central structure of the station is a 70-meter-diameter circular concrete cylinderwith a helicoidal pattern on its surface to emphasize the sense of depth. large circular openings (skylights) in the ceiling allow natural light to penetrate deep into the basement, maximizing openness and visibility. the interior spaces are connected bypedestrian bridges, escalators, balconies, and galleries for ease of movement.

the station is part of Europe’s largest urban development project, the “Grand Paris Express,” which aims to build a new rail network to facilitate travel between the suburbs of Paris bypassing the city center. by 2030, more than 200 kilometers of automated lines and 68 new stations willbe added, with the ultimate goal of efficiently connecting the city center and suburbs, revitalizing new residential and commercial areas, and increasing mobility and labor market fluidity.
