1. Enhanced Experience with a New Viewing Route

On December 8, 2024, Notre-Dame Cathedral reopened its doors after 5 years of restoration. The viewing route has been newly organized, allowing visitors to enter through the ‘Last Judgment’ door and appreciate the interior of the cathedral from north to south. The sculptural wall depicting the life and resurrection of Christ is now closer than ever, and digital guides and applications assist visitors until they exit through the southern door with a view of the Seine River.

2. Restoration Art Born from French Artisans’ Hands

The 96m Gothic spire designed by Viollet-le-Duc in the 19th century has been restored to its original form, and the interior altar has been newly created as a bronze work by French designer Guillaume Bardet. Even the wooden roof, baptismal font, pulpit, and vases have been reimagined through a combination of modern technology and artisanal craftsmanship.

The 12-meter high asymmetric staircase was designed by a Normandy craftsman who participated in the restoration of Versailles and Mont-Saint-Michel, and the restoration and cleaning of the cathedral’s bells were handled by the Cornille Havard foundry, showcasing the essence of French bell-making tradition. They also created the ‘Victory Bell’ to commemorate the 2024 Paris Olympics.

3. Changed Details from Liturgical Garments to Chairs

A total of 700 liturgical garments were produced in collaboration with designer Jean-Charles de Castelbajac and French workshops, while 1,500 chairs were made from French oak. Additionally, biodegradable eco-friendly offering candles have been introduced to enhance sustainability.

The 7 new tapestries that will adorn the cathedral walls are currently being produced at the French National Manufacturing Workshop, and contemporary works by Miquel Barceló and Michael Armitage are on display.

4. Stained Glass and Space Development Project

The 6 stained glass windows in the southern chapel were created by contemporary artists selected through an international competition, while the existing glass windows have been relocated to a museum located in Hôtel Dieu. A new visual experience combining Gothic style and contemporary art fills the interior of the cathedral.

Additionally, the city of Paris plans to redesign Notre-Dame Square over three years through a redevelopment project, creating amenities such as bookstores, cafes, and restrooms to provide a more pleasant viewing environment.

The reopening of Notre-Dame Cathedral, where history and art, tradition and modernity intersect, offers a new cultural experience beyond mere restoration. It is a must-visit place if you plan to travel to Paris.
