The Seoul Museum of Photography is finally opening its doors. This museum, which is a branch of the Seoul Museum of Art, is the first public exhibition hall in Korea specialized in photography, and it will officially open on June 29, 2025, in Chang-dong, Dobong-gu, Seoul, after a 10-year preparation period.

The Seoul Museum of Photography, with 2 basement levels and 4 above-ground floors, is designed with a total area of 7,048㎡, including an exhibition hall of 1,800㎡, photography education rooms, darkrooms, a photo library, and a photo book café, creating a space that encompasses the history and present of photography. Visitors can experience and immerse themselves in the medium of photography in various ways beyond just viewing exhibitions.

The architecture was designed collaboratively by Austrian architect Mladen Jadric and the Korean architectural firm Ilgugong Urban Architecture, featuring a facade that embodies the basic unit of photography, ‘pixel’. Efforts to architecturally realize the essence of photography can be seen not only in the exterior but also within the space.
Opening Special Exhibition Series: 〈Light(光) Perspective〉

The title of the special opening exhibition held throughout 2025 is 〈Light(光) Perspective〉. The results of the Seoul Museum of Art’s photo archive, data collection, and research activities, which have been ongoing since 2015, will be presented in a diverse manner. Two exhibitions, 〈Radiance 光彩: Moments of Beginning〉 and 〈Storage Story〉, will open simultaneously on June 29, offering new interpretations and interactions surrounding photography. A third opening exhibition is scheduled to be unveiled in December.
Vision of the Seoul Museum of Photography
This opening is not just the launch of a single museum; it is also the starting point for Seoul and South Korea to become a hub for photographic art in Asia. This space, which integrates all functions related to photography, including exhibitions, education, research, collection, and preservation, is set to grow into a global photography art platform.
