the National Museum of Contemporary Art Seoul recently reorganized the public spaces on the ground floor. A key change was the introduction of a modular furniture system to better utilize the empty space between the MMCA’s multipurpose space and the cinema.
in addition to exhibitions, public spaces play an important role in museums, where visitors hang out. the reorganization was designed with the flexibility of the space in mind, and the design studio Guo Duo was responsible for the overall furniture design
keeping in mind the various uses of the space, Guo Duo devised a modular system to provide comfort during the day, when it is used as a lounge and rest area, and functionality during events such as press conferences and workshops.
the furniture is made of lightweight materials that are easy to move and rearrange, and the stretchy, stain-resistant fabrics from Italian fabric brand Fidivi are used to ensure both durability and design integrity. the furniture is available in a variety of colors, including burgundy, navy, beige, and green, which complement the colorful ceiling and bring the space to life.
“The goal was to provide a comfortable, yet versatile environment for the people who use the space,” says the design team. each element of the furniture connects with each other to create a changing form, which enriches the user experience,” explains the team.
