If You’re a Design Lover, Pay Attention! 3 Hot Design and Architecture Exhibitions in Tokyo

Sensational spaces, forward-thinking perspectives, and reinterpretations of everyday life—here are three must-see design exhibitions in Tokyo. This season, Tokyo is hosting three major exhibitions that encompass architecture, food culture, and contemporary art, capturing the attention of art enthusiasts.
1. National Art Center, Tokyo – Living Modernity: Housing Experiments 1920s–1970s

A must-see exhibition among Japan’s architecture exhibitions. The National Art Center shines a light on modern housing architecture experiments conducted from the early 20th century to the 1970s. Fourteen historical houses designed by world-renowned architects such as Le Corbusier, Mies van der Rohe, and Frank Gehry are exhibited thematically, divided into seven key elements that make up modern residential design including kitchens, bathrooms, windows, furniture, and media.
In particular, the full-scale reproduction of Mies van der Rohe’s ‘Low House’ offers visitors a time-travel-like experience. This exhibition runs until June 30, 2025.
2. 21_21 Design Sight – Ramen Donburi Exhibition: The Art of the Ramen Bowl

If you love ramen, you can’t miss this exhibition. A special exhibition themed around the iconic ‘ramen bowl’ of Japanese ramen culture is being held at 21_21 Design Sight, a design exhibition hotspot in Tokyo. Along with a reinterpretation of traditional pottery ‘Minoyaki (美濃焼)’, 40 original ramen bowls created by various designers, architects, and artists will be displayed.

Additionally, there will be unique ‘ramen food stall’ exhibition booths designed by three different architects, available for viewing until June 15, 2025.
3. National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo – Hilma af Klint: The First Asian Retrospective

The most notable name in contemporary art exhibitions, Hilma af Klint’s first large-scale solo exhibition in Asia is being held in Tokyo. An innovative artist who opened the door to abstraction before Kandinsky and Mondrian, her works captivate viewers with energetic forms and warm colors influenced by mysticism and spiritualism.

Over 140 works will be showcased, including the large piece ‘Ten Largest’ series that attracted 600,000 visitors at the Guggenheim exhibition in New York. This Tokyo contemporary art exhibition is highly recommended for those experiencing Hilma’s artistic world for the first time.
