museum Mountain in Wonju, Gangwon Province, has taken another evolution. on June 20, GROUND, a new meditative space created by two masters of exposed concrete, Tadao Ando and Antony Gormley, a master of contemporary sculpture, finally opened its doors. the world’s first permanent Antony Gormley museum, it is a unique place where architecture, sculpture and nature come together through the visitor’s experience.
‘Ground’, a cave-inspired space
Hidden beneath the flower garden at the beginning of the museum’s mountain, like an ancient stone cave, ‘Ground’ was designed by Tadao Ando in response to Anthony Gormley’s request for a “cave-like space to enclose my work”
.the interior, a massive circular dome 25 meters in diameter and 7.2 meters high, has no artificial lighting, relying solely on natural light from small circular glass windows in the ceiling. the shifting light changes the mood of the space and carves the passage of time over seven of Gomori’s ‘Block Works’ sculptures of the human body made from rusted iron blocks.
it’s reminiscent of the Roman Pantheon, but it also creates a unique meditative experience where natural and man-made, light and shadow intersect
.Two
- ways
to fully experience the ‘Ground’
- Feel the echo: Due to the nature of the dome structure, even the smallest footsteps or whispers are amplified into a loud echo that fills the space
- anthony Gormley says this unexpected acoustic effect brings the space to life, and is an important element in making visitors clearly aware of their presence.
- Take a step back and observe: Before entering the space, linger in the Observation Room, where you can peer inside through glass windows .
- watching other visitors walk among the sculptures and contemplating your relationship to the space, to yourself, and to others is a key part of the “grounding” suggested by the two masters
DRAWING
ON SPACE, the largest solo exhibition in Korea
In conjunction with the opening of ‘Ground’, Cheongjo Gallery at Museumsan presents ‘DRAWING ON SPACE’, the largest solo exhibition in Korea by Anthony Gomri, until November 30th
.the exhibition brings together 48 works that explore the relationship between space and the body, including sculptures, drawings, and large-scale installations.
The spatial installation ‘Orbit Field II’, which fills Cheongjo Gallery 3, is not to be missed.
the work requires visitors to crouch, lean, and crawl through 37 steel circular structures, bringing the space to life by making the viewer’s physical experience a part of the work.
