outpost is designed to provide a modern way to experience Ganghwa-do’s historic “money district” through the familiar space of a cafe.

strengthening Outpost

in Ganghwa Island, stone is not just a natural object, but an important element of local history and culture. various rocks and terrains have been formed from prehistoric times to the Goryeo and Joseon dynasties, and to reflect these characteristics, Stonery, which opened in Ganghwa Island last year, is a multicultural space that tells the story of stone. it includes a stay, cafe, restaurant, and walking trails, and you can find the harmony of stone and nature everywhere.

among them, Café Outpost is a representative space based on the motif of the Dondae, which forms the unique landscape of Ganghwado. the design is inspired by dondae, a circular fortress built with stacked stones to monitor and defend against enemies during the Joseon Dynasty, and utilizes low circular walls to organize the space.

the café has two floors, and the first floor features a central stone garden, a circular wall, and seating that utilizes steps to create a natural depth to the space. on the second floor, two circular walls are placed around the outdoor area, reinterpreting the structure of the donjang in a modern way.

in particular, the small windows that were once used to shoot cannons have been converted into table seats to enjoy nature, and the dark space where the cannons were stored has been converted into cozy private seating. the interior is designed with low light levels throughout to maximize the contrast with the natural light from the windows, and the tiered flooring allows for good views from any seat.

as such, Outpost is a unique space that reinterprets traditional elements of Ganghwado with a modern twist, allowing visitors to experience history in a different way.
